Here’s Your 11-Piece Minimal Classic Shoe Capsule Wardrobe

If you're looking to create or update your classic style shoe capsule, I'm a former shoe designer and current stylist that can help!

A clearly defined capsule shoe collection is a perfect way to build a stylish and versatile set of shoes that work your personal style and life. In this case, one for those who prefer a classic aesthetic.

Luckily, this style is one of the easiest to create as it builds upon, as it incorporates the 7 essential women's shoes as its base.

By creating a shoe collection that includes up to 12 of these classic shoe styles, you'll be able to put together different outfits for various occasions.

11-Piece Classic Shoe Capsule Collection

This classic shoe collection will work best for those who live in seasonal climate and prefer dressing in timeless looks that vary between casual, business casual, professional and elevated outfits.

Great for women who work in an office setting too!

1. Classic Loafers

Loafers make great capsule shoes for almost any fashion style, since there are so many types of loafers to choose from.

Whether you're wearing dress pants, jeans or a sundress, loafers are a semi-casual and stylish, year-round choice.

For a classic wardrobe, I recommend choosing between horsebit loafers or penny loafers. The first have a more elevated look, while penny loafers offer an old money, preppy appeal.

Black, burgundy and espresso brown colored loafers work for most seasons and looks. Patent leather versions can make them more dressy, while suede ones give a casual feel.

If you have only one pair of loafers in your capsule, go with a darker shade in a smooth leather material to maximize versatility.

You can add white crew socks to make your loafers look more preppy casual, knit tights for winter, or pair them with no show socks in spring/summer.

2. Neutral Colored Ballet Flats

A neutral colored ballet flat is a must-have addition to a classic capsule shoe collection. Much like loafers, the ballet flat has had a surge in popularity as of late with variants with square toes and Mary Jane straps.

A timeless black pair such as those worn by Audrey Hepburn are a preferred choice for a classic style and look great at any age.

If you already have a black leather loafer, you can add more color variety with a brown, tan, burgundy or patent ballet flat. If it works better for your wardrobe, a timeless two-tone cap-toe version can be just as stylish.

3. Sleek White Lace-Up Sneakers

A casual lace-up sneaker is the perfect everyday style to add to a classic wardrobe. This is a sleek looking almond-toe sneaker that isn't chunky or athletic looking.

They are easy to incorporate seamlessly with classic outfits and don't make outfits look as sporty as other styles.

White or off white versions are most versatile. That said, white sneakers need to be cleaned regularly to look chic enough to wear with more outfits.

If this poses a challenge for you, try choosing a crinkly leather style, a light grey color, or mixed material style like the ones featured above.

4. Black Pointed Suede Pumps

Sleek pumps, especially in black suede, are my top closed-toe heels to add to a classic capsule shoe wardrobe.

Pointed-toe pumps with a walkable stiletto of about 3.5 inches are the most versatile. I have a pair and they've been a staple in my closet for almost 15 years!

They can be worn to elevate simple jeans and t-shirt outfits, or paired with a cocktail dress or suit. The fact that they are season-less adds to their appeal. Clip on a sparkly shoe accessory and you've got a completely different shoe!

If you comfort is top priority, try a pair with a block heel. That said, you can find many brands that make classic pumps with comfort and even special sizing in mind. Geox, Clarks and Naturalizer are three such brands.

5. Block Heel Pumps

If you reserve your pointy pumps with a higher heel for special occasions, a lower heeled pump can act as your everyday pair.

You can opt for a block heel pointed pump in a beige leather, to contrast your black stiletto pumps. Or, try a classic beige or black Chanel-inspired slingback style with a block heel.

A rounded toe ‘granny' shoe can also work, although less classic and more of a relaxed style.

6. Sleek Dark Ankle Boots

Sleek leather heeled ankle boots are always in style and perfect for in-between seasons, including fall/winter.

Ankle boots are easy to wear with most outfits including skirts, pants and dresses. You can easily swap them in with outfits you'd normally wear with pumps, on cooler days.

A pair of black or brown ankle boots with a 2-3 inch block or slim heel and higher vamp will be the most versatile, all-year addition to your classic capsule.

However, if a tan or taupe pair blends best with your wardrobe and you live in a more moderate climate, give them a try!

7. Dark Chelsea Boots

When you have sleek black heeled ankle boots that you might not want to wear everyday, including a more rugged style to your classic shoe capsule is practical.

A classic Chelsea boot fits the bill as these easily integrate with casual day-to-day, and even business casual outfits.

You can style them with trousers and a cardigan for work, but a supportive pair can take you on longer strolls in sweats or jeans.

For the minimalist classic lady, choose a pair of waterproof Chelsea boots to double as rain boots in spring and fall.

Can't find a splash-proof pair? Try one of these waterproof shoe sprays, or have try your hand at at making your shoes waterproof.

8. Heeled Knee Boots

Heeled knee boots with are a highly versatile style to wear to the office under a pantsuit, with a dress on a dinner date, or casually with slim jeans or leggings and a relaxed white shirt.

If you already own leather ankle boots in your capsule shoe wardrobe, opt for a suede knee boot or vice-versa. Any shade of brown, tan or black will always be in style.

In terms of shape, I love the look of a straight leg leather knee boot with a sturdy 2-3 inch sturdy heel.

9. Beige/Blush Minimal-Heeled Sandals

For warmer days at more elevated functions, try a beige or blush minimal strap sandals in a mid to high heel. I recommend a 2-3 inch block heel sandal for ease of wear, but you can go higher or lower.

Easily style minimal sandals with everything from jeans and tee to pantsuits to a cocktail dress. If the sandal color matches your skin tone, you'll elongate your legs when wearing shorter hemlines, so no need to stick to beige/blush.

Sandal simplicity at its finest is Stuart Weitzman's collection of Nudist sandals. With their minimal straps, various heel heights, widths and colors, these sandal hits the minimalist mark every time.

Alternate color suggestions: Any color that matches your skin-tone, gold or black.

10. Simple Leather Slides

Whether you're headed to brunch or running errands around town, classic slides outfits are an effortless choice that will suit any classic wardrobe.

A chic slide is a perfect shoe for warmer days when you want to throw on something quick and easy but still keep things classic. I love a flat leather tan version with one or two straps, or with a criss-cross strap.

Need a more supportive sandal? Pick a Greek sandal or style that holds the ankle in the shoe. Brown is my top choice to add to a classic capsule shoe collection, but dark brown, gold or black are viable alternatives.

11. Statement Shoes, with a Classic Twist

And last but not least, your shoe wildcard! You wouldn't think statement shoes for capsule wardrobes make any sense, but some of us have a shoe itch to scratch.

You can either pick a shoe that really speaks to you, or, go for a classic silhouette like a pump or ballet flat in a bright color like pink or in a fun leopard print. The possibilities are endless–which can pose an issue for those of us who are drawn to shoe shopping!

The trick with keeping to a streamlined shoe capsule is to not have multiples statement shoes, especially if they serve the same function.

Try to keep your “fun” shoes to a maximum of three in differetn categories. For instance, a leopard print sneaker, metallic silver high heel, and red ballerina flat.
