Your Top 5 New Year’s Shoe Resolutions

Your Top 5 New Year’s Shoe Resolutions

The New Year has begun and if you haven't yet made any fashionable New Year's resolutions for any year, now is the time to get it together and get some lined-up! So may I make a few shoe blogger suggestions that pertain to your feet & footwear style?

Yes? Why thank you! You can now read on…

5 New Year’s Shoe Resolutions

1. Buy Comfortable Shoes That Fit

This may seem like a no-brainer, but we've all been there: that stunning shoe calling out your name so loudly, that you ignore the fact that it barely fits & makes your toes feel like they've been placed in a cheese grater. This is bad shopping & also bad for your feet!

Yep, there are products out there to make too big shoes fit & many methods to make shoes bigger. That being said, there's no excuse to avoid buying the right size in the first place. Because even if you love the shoes, if they don't fit properly, you're likely never to wear them.

Comfort should be right up there with aesthetics when buying shoes, whether it be boots, sneakers or heels. Think of it this way: if the shoe doesn't fit, makes your feet bleed or has you tripping all over yourself, wearability is minimized.

And as great as it feels to remove painful shoes mid-party, it isn't so classy, nor very hygienic. So please don't take the saying “killer heels” literally; it's not good for your wallet, feet, back or your sexy swagger! Stick with shoes that are both sexy and comfortable! Trust me, they exist 🙂

2. Clear Out Your Shoe Closet

They say time is money, but for most (especially to us city gals), space is also money. I'm wouldn't dare tell you to throw away shoes that add to your wardrobe.

However, I'm here to advise you in discerning between which ones are useful & which ones are just taking up valuable space. A few guidelines to help you out in deciding what should stay & what should go:

  • If you haven't worn them in more than 2 years, it's time to retire them. Yes, it's that simple. In theory anyways!
  • If they have irreparable holes, rips or hardware problems (ie a broken heel/buckle you're never going to get fixed), say goodbye.
  • This last point brings us back to Shoe Resolution #1: If they don't fit, are too tight or are uncomfortable, let them go. You're not going to wear them again. I promise!

I recently went through my own shoe closet & had some decisions to make with respect to which shoes to hang on to & which ones to dismiss. Although it's difficult to part with many of them, my limited downtown Toronto space simply isn't able to keep up with the amount of incoming shoes!

The great thing about when you decide to burge some of your new or barely worn shoes is there being a market for it. I'm currently using my blog to sell part of my shoe closet, but I also plan on getting them posted on eBay & similar sites in order to generate some cash from my closet!

Unable to convince you to shoe purge? Well let me throw the charity card at you: there are many people and non-profit organizations who'd love to have your still wearable, used shoes.

So why not bag 'em and donate them to Goodwill or to the Ron White Foundation? I'm sure your shoe closet won't mind!

3. Be Bold: Take fashion risks with your Shoes!

Albeit I'm the first to state that investing in a good pair of classics is a must, these should not, however, overwhelm your shoe closet with simple shoe staples.

The great thing is that the most fun, colourful & structurally interesting shoes can easily be found on sale, as the fashion herd generally heads straight for the more commercial soles.

So even if you want to stay on trend with the shoe of the moment, why not make switch it up a little. Like, say silver Hunter rain boots instead of black ones, or pointed pumps in cobalt blue rather than beige? Or maybe add a pair of ornate socks to a sandal or pump!?

Be different this year & make a statement! Yes Toronto, I am VERY much speaking to YOU. Add some life to that dark apparel! Black is great, but can get boring rather fast & your feet a little sad.

4. Take Care of Your Feet

You know that part of your anatomy called a foot, which your shoes usually house? In 2016, let's not forget to take care of them, especially if you're going to slip into toe-revealing sandals and/or strain them in 5 inch heels. Make them pretty & pamper them with a good massage!

And if manis & pedis are out of your budget, they're not so difficult to them yourself. It might take a few tries after watching a handful of YouTube videos, but if you keep the polish neutral & simple, you'll get the hang of it in no time!

But for more on this resolution, let me give the floor to my friend Neana from her previous shoe blog Shoe Radar, whose Sister Girl Pledge post I would very much like you to swear by from this day forward.

Some highlights from her hilarious, yet oh so true post. Because there are certain things, no one should be subjected to viewing:

  1. I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow & shave the hairs off my big toe
  2. I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. Scholl’s if my feet need him
  3. I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/coworker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her!
  4. I will promise to go to my local nail salon at least once per season and have a real pedicure (or give one to myself!)

And don't forget to moisturize! There are some amazing foot care products out there, such as Burt's Bees coconut foot moisturizer, which I've tried, reviewed & highly recommend!

5. Remove those shoe label stickers from your soles!

shoe label symbols

Many a celebrity (Selena Gomez *cough*) & regular Earthlings such you, kind readers are guilty of this. I know cause I see it almost every day.

This may just be a pet-peeve of mine, but really, what do you need to keep these stickers on your shoe soles for? Just remember to remove them before wearing your shoes, as you'll be far too reluctant to take them off afterwards.

But really, I'd like to prevent these tags from becoming a useless & very unglamorous part of your footwear. I mean, can you image them on a red lacquered sole of a Louboutin? Yeah, I know. FRIGHTENING!

So please leave home without them. Your shoes will thank you! And honestly, I will too!

FYI: it's a good thing to know how to read these material tags, which will tell you what the outsole, upper and upper lining are made out of.

Here's to a happy, healthy & shoe friendly New Year 🙂

Thanks! They just look so silly, especially so when worn with a pair of Jimmys or Loubis. Ick!
